Meston Reid was born in Aberdeenshire and studied singing with the late Herbert Caesari and Stanley Young. He sang in various operatic productions before taking part (and becoming a finalist) in the Count Cinzano Scholarship competition for young singers in 1965.
In 1968 he joined Sadler's Wells Opera Company and sang several parts with them. He also sang at the English Bach Festival and in tours of "Lilac Time", "The Desert Song", and "The King And I"
He joined the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company in 1974 as a principal tenor, singing Box, Ralph Rackstraw, Alexis, Tolloller, the Duke of Dunstable, Richard Dauntless, and Marco.
