Medium height, rubicund complexion, and - dare we whisper it -"stouter than he used to be"; add an unfailingly cheerful disposition, and you have the superficial ingredients for the very popular Director of Productions of the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company. But holding down this difficult job required considerable qualities other than these. Herbert Newby would not have been the splendid Director of Productions that he was if he were merely popular: the important thing is that he was respected.
Herbert Newby joined the Company as a tenor chorister at the end of 1946, and was soon given understudy parts, later singing the Defendant, Ralph Rackstraw, Nanki-Poo, Leonard, and Luiz; in fact, he has at one time or another sung nearly all the leading tenor roles.
In 1955 he felt he would like to go on to the Production staff, and became Assistant Stage Manager, from which he progressed to Director of Productions, where he reigned firmly but benevolently over all the productions. He married the Welsh contralto Ceinwen Jones, who was also a chorister with the Opera Company
