Elsie Spain made her debut in "Miss Hook of Holland" (replacing Isabel Jay) in 1907. The following season she was principal soprano at the Savoy playing the roles of Josephine, Mabel, Patience, Phyllis, Princess Ida, Yum-Yum, Elsie Maynard and Gianetta. There she made a favourable impression upon Charles Workman who wanted to cast her as the Fairy Queen in Gilbert's last opera "Fallen Fairies". Gilbert, however, insisted on casting Nancy McIntosh.
After leaving the Company in 1910, Miss Spain subsequently appeared in "The Chocolate Soldier" (with Charles Workman) and "The Quaker Girl" and continued to appear in West End shows until 1916. Thereafter she toured in Variety.
