DURWARD LELY
1852 - 1944)

Durward Lely was one of the great tenors of early D'Oyly Carte days He was leading tenor from 1880 to 1887, and at first played Frederic.

He created the parts of the Duke of Dunstable, Earl Tolloller, Cyril, Nanki-Poo, and Richard Dauntless, and also played Defendant, and Alexis in "The Sorcerer".

He was a close friend of Henry Lytton, though they were not playing at the Savoy at the same time, Lely having left in 1887 while Lytton did not join the Company until 1897.
