References to Lincolnshire Poachers and music-hall jokes about Scunthorpe are out as far as Colin Wright is concerned, for he was born and brought up there and put it on the map as far as D'Oyly Carte is concerned.
A talented musician, he first trained as a pianist at the Royal Academy of Music, and then joined the Welsh National Opera "training school" and trained as a singer. He gained his professional experience with the Black and White Minstrels and with Opera for All before auditioning for the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company.
Engaged in 1969, he spent a year in the chorus, and was then promoted to principal tenor, following Philip Potter in the roles of Defendant, Frederic, Nanki-Poo, Hilarion, Colonel Fairfax, and Luiz.
In 1972, during the company's London season, he married Marjorie Williams, who was a principal soprano with the company from 1969 to 1975, but the marriage was eventually dissolved.
Colin left the company in 1975 and, in addition to the parts mentioned above, he also played Bailey Barre and Ernest.
